Rescuing dogs is one of the most impactful, difficult and often thankless jobs out there. The Sniffspot Best Dog Rescue and Shelter Contest is one of the ways Sniffspot is trying to help rescues and shelters adopt more dogs. It is an annual event where dog rescues can be featured as the most recommended dog rescues in their city, state and in the United States.

About Sniffspot

Sniffspot is the largest network of private dog parks for rent in the world. Each of the thousands of Sniffspot dog parks are hosted by locals on private land with private bookings to maximize safety for guests and their dogs. Sniffspot offers various types of dog parks, including fenced fields, water parks, indoor dog parks, dog beaches, and more. View Sniffspot's private dog parks near you.

About the Sniffspot Annual Dog Rescue and Shelter Contest

The annual contest begins with nominations, where anyone can nominate a rescue to be included in the contest. Nominations for the annual contest are generally opened in the first part of the year. To make sure you are notified of nominations opening, we recommend creating a Sniffspot account to join our email list and follow us on Instagram and TikTok.

Shortly after nominations close, we launch the contest. This contest is about testimonials from adoptees, volunteers, fosters, staff, supporters and fans. The more testimonials that a rescue / shelter gets, the better. The contest is open for testimonials generally for two weeks.

At the end of the contest, we create lists of most recommended rescues by city, state and nationally, which will be published on our website, to our 300,000+ email list and 100,000+ social followers. These lists include rescue/shelter-provided profile information and the submitted testimonials. These lists are final until the next year and next contest comes around.

As part of being featured on our top lists, dog rescues and shelters can create a profile that shares information, such as cities / states served, profile photo, focus areas and a bio.

A few notes on dog rescue and shelter nominations and recommendations:

  • We will not include rescues that do not meet legal requirements, are inhumane or unethical.
  • Whether a rescue is eligible to be included on our list is solely determined at Sniffspot's discretion
  • If you have multiple rescues you love, you can nominate multiple rescues.
  • This contest is only open to dog rescues in the United States
  • We only allow one recommendation per person per rescue and enforce this through data analytics

The State of Public Dog Parks Across the United States

From 2009 to 2020, there was a 40 percent increase in the development of public dog parks. Designated spots for canine exercise have become commonplace in every major city in North America — many pet owners won’t even consider renting an apartment that doesn’t have its own fenced-in pet area for their canine companions.

How This Family is Affording Their Dream Property Through Renting it Hourly to Dogs

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
