Nestled in the heart of our community, the Harlingen Animal Shelter represents a beacon of hope for our four-legged friends. Officially established in 2024 as a proud department of the City of Harlingen, our purpose is heartfelt and simple: to find forever homes for cats, dogs, and all their adorable puppies and kittens.
At Harlingen Animal Shelter, we believe that every animal deserves a chance at happiness and a loving family. With this belief guiding us, our dedicated team of nine full-time staff members and two part-time staff members work to care for our animals, coordinate meaningful adoptions, engage our community through social media, and do everything within our power to ensure our furry friends find loving homes they deserve.
Our commitment extends beyond just finding forever homes; we're also here to reunite lost pets with their families. Thanks to the diligent work of city animal care services, dogs and cats that find their way to us are given a chance to return to their owners through our team's reunification efforts.
At the Harlingen Animal Shelter, every day is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of animals and humans alike. Through love, care, and the relentless pursuit of happy tails, we strive to create a community where every pet has a place to call home.
Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter
#100 in United States, #22 in Texas, #1 in Brownsville
All Port Isabel residents owning pets (dogs or cats) must have those pets Microchipped. Microchipping offers pet owners the only truly permanent method of identifying your pet and linking that pet back to you and limits the numbers of animals going to the shelter. Microchipping will be made at the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal shelter at the end of Woody Lane in Port Isabel.
The Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter in Port Isabel, TX is a no-termination date shelter providing homes, medical care, and socialization to homeless and surrendered animals until they are adopted into their forever homes. Our friendly staff will help you take a pet out to meet and interact with them, and can answer your questions about the pet's known health history and temperament.
Friends of Animal Rescue
#100 in United States, #22 in Texas, #1 in Brownsville
Friends of Animal Rescue is a 501(C)(3) non profit organization that was founded in 2010 to assist the City of Port Isabel when the City took control of the Isabel Y. Garcia Animal Shelter. After placing the shelter’s 400 animals, Friends refocused their efforts towards the animals on South Padre Island. We believe there is a home for each and every homeless animal. We do not believe in euthanizing for the sake of over population, thus we are a no kill shelter for the City of South Padre Island. We are the voice of the animals, assisting & caring for over 800 animals in a given year.
Friends of Animal Rescue services South Padre Island by:
1. Reuniting lost pets with residents and tourists
2. Adopting out the homeless and unclaimed animals
3. Vetting of animals, which includes spaying/neutering, vaccinations, micro-chipping, heartworm testing & treatment
4. Implementing a trap and release program to reduce feral cat population and the spread of disease
5. Assisting in the care of wildlife: possums, raccoons, birds, turtles, etc. by partnering with organizations such as Sea Life and Sea Turtle, Inc.
Friends of Animal Rescue also does the following:
• Out of state adoptions, including assisting in arranging transport for those animals
• Assist in the transfer of certain dog breeds to specific rescues, such as Pug Hearts of Houston
• Transfer cats to San Antonio Humane Society to get them adopted faster
