Good Karma was started by Stacey Tollackson in 2011 after experience volunteering and fostering for other local organizations. We have grown from just a couple of foster parents to a network spanning hundreds of caring folks from Kendall to Port Saint Lucie with over a dozen partner veterinarians. We are now the largest foster-based rescue in Florida and saved over 2,000 dogs & cat in 2022. We rescue dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, breeds, and medical conditions. As long as we can find safe, appropriate placement with one of our foster parents, we welcome them into our program.

Eddy Alvarez has patrolled the edge of the Everglades, Redlands, Homestead area for the past 20 years, feeding abandoned dogs, cats, birds, etc on a daily basis. Eddy feeds at least 50 ‚ 60 dogs on any given day. He has been doing this on his own, most of the time paying for vetting out of his own pocket and getting scraps from restaurants so the dogs would not go hungry. It wasn't until about two years ago, that while Eddy was feeding the dogs a car stopped to ask what he was doing. At that point Eddy explained to her that he would feed homeless, abandoned dogs daily. This person was Jennifer Bird from Fur Kids in Pennsylvania, and she helped Eddy get some exposure. Eddy does not have too many volunteers, but has managed to save thousands of dogs in the past years with the help of few trusted friends and supporters.

This started with a chick who loves pit bulls. It started with finding some strays and rehoming them successfully. It started when I would watch these dogs flourish in their new homes over the years and think, wow, a dog from off the streets had so much potential, what about all the others? There are incredible dogs out there that just need another chance. Statistics show in the US approximately 390,000 dogs are euthanized each year, some of them simply because they have been overlooked. I believe we can educate people and help to change the statistics. We can spay & neuter, rescue, rehabilitate, rehome.

The Pet Project was founded in 2002, originally established to assist individuals having HIV/AIDS. Carefully modeled after the successful POWARS (Pet Owners with AIDS Resource Services) program, services were offered to those who qualified within the Broward & Miami/Dade area. From 2002 to 2007 The Pet Project averaged a 15% client growth annually, predominantly generated from "Word-Of-Mouth" referrals. With five years of experience, and a very successful track record of providing for those challenged with HIV/AIDS, The Pet Project in 2007 expanded it's services to include the terminally ill, the elderly and the disabled. This insight to the needs of the local area and courageous decision to expand quickly doubled the annual growth of clients during the following two years, bearing a 30% average growth from 2007 to 2009. The success of the expansion gave birth to many more new ideas for growth and partnerships benefiting the clients of The Pet Project. In 2010 a partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County allowed The Pet Project to provide vouchers to their clients for free pet vaccinations and reduced veterinarian services. In 2011 a three year relationship was established with Natural Balance Pet Food allowing us to serve more clients. In 2012 a gift/grant from the Petco Foundation was awarded to The Pet Project of $55k, allowing the purchase of a box truck for increased hauling and distribution of pet food. In 2013 a larger building was secured, home of The Pet Project today. This increased square footage not only allowed for the storage and distribution of more pet food, but also allowed for the opening of "Hidden Treasures" thrift store, where all proceeds directly benefit The Pet Project. In 2014 The Pet Project went into "Event Over-Drive", raising thousands of dollars with a "Paws-4-Paws" Halloween pet parade and "Push-Ups-For-Pets" athletic challenge. 2015 marked a historic moment in the undeniable growth and admirable benefit that The Pet Project was bringing to the Broward & Miami/Dade residents. The Rescue Bank, a national nonprofit organization that works with pet food companies to distribute their donated pet food and supplies to approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations throughout the country, selected The Pet Project as their Florida affiliate. The Pet Project receives, warehouses and distributes this donated product for the Rescue Bank to approved Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. The Pet Project is one of Rescue Bank's approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations therefore we receive a portion of the donated products which saves us substantially in pet food costs while distributing portions of those donations to other surrounding 501(c)(3) organizations - in turn feeding more pets. Today, having kept thousands of "Pets & People Together Forever", The Pet Project continues to grow, and hopes to expand and be seen not only throughout the state of Florida, but throughout the country. Monthly over 7000 lbs. of pet food is distributed from The Pet Project. The event schedule raising thousands of dollars monthly continues to expand, now including a Bowl-A-Thon, A Female Impersonator Extravaganza, A Pet Night Out, 4th of July BBQ Bash and many more. Local business owners now dedicate evenings hosting events at their place of business, directly benefiting The Pet Project. While presently a "One-Of-A-Kind" organization, dedicated to keeping pets with people, no matter the circumstances - The Pet Project continues to relentlessly dream of growth. The goal to provide food, veterinarian services, foster and find homes for pets suffering from the loss of their human companion will never change - that is the foundation of The Pet Project.

How To AdoptADOPTION APPLICATION‚ Adopting a rescued Golden Retriever could be one of the most rewarding things you do in life! It's also a big decision with many considerations. It's a long-term commitment requiring the support and help of all members of your family. As a rescue organization, we help Goldens who need a new beginning. There are many factors that we must consider before matching a dog with a family. Each story is different, some are mistreated or neglected, abandoned, or surrendered, some rescued from dire and horrific conditions. In all situations they have been let down by humans therefore we must prioritize finding the dog the best homes vs. finding the perfect pet for you. The first step in the adoption process is to complete the ADOPTION APPLICATION, followed by a home visit.
Does your dog ever growl when you walk by their food dish? Maybe they get possessive of treats, carrying them far away and giving you side-eye when you start to approach — or snarling at your other pets or children if they get too close.
As almost every dog owner is aware, the nose of a dog is an amazing thing. Just as they can pick up sounds we can’t hear, their sense of smell and ability to pick up scents is well beyond ours. In fact, dogs have 40 times the number of olfactory receptors as humans.
More than 80 million Americans rely on their service dogs to help them navigate the world. Task-trained assistance animals perform a huge range of life-changing—in many cases, life-saving—services: These dogs act as eyes for visually impaired handlers, provide mobility support, alert to seizures and blood sugar crashes, interrupt anxiety attacks, remind their people to take medications, and so much more.
You thought your dog was house trained. Your home was clean from puddles of pee, those dreaded middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks were behind you, and you loved every minute of dog ownership… until your four-legged best friend started using the bathroom inside again. What’s going on?
Ah, poop. We humans think it’s disgusting… but many of our dogs seem to love the stuff. If you’re wondering why your canine companion tries to eat feces (either their own or that of other animals) you’re not alone!
Do you have a water-loving dog looking to burn some energy? There are countless dog parks to visit throughout our country — but some of them become far too hot in the midday sun to be safe for your pets to play. That’s why we’ve put together a list of some of the best dog water parks throughout the United States! At these locations, your pup can frolic, splash, and swim to their heart’s content.

Does your dog destroy every toy you give them? Is your house littered with remnants of fabric and stuffing of all different sizes? Are you tired of investing in “indestructible” toys only for your pup to still dismantle—or worse, get bored of—them in just a few days?
You’ve been told your dog needs regular exercise. There’s a reason “walking the dog” is a classic daily activity: Frequent excursions give your pup a chance to experience the world, maintain a healthy weight, and — most importantly — spend time with you! Consistent physical activity can also improve their strength, muscle tone, coordination, and mental ability over time.

Many dogs have gotten a bad reputation over the years for being "dangerous breeds." Rottweilers are among them. Like pit bulls and other large, blocky-headed types of dogs, these powerful and beautiful animals are often assumed to be aggressive.
Your dog is reactive. They’ll see another dog, person, or other stimulus in the environment (like a car or bike) while out on a walk and suddenly go crazy at the end of their leash. The barking, lunging, and growling feels embarrassing for you — and it’s clear that your pup isn’t having a great time either.
Does your dog display reactivity to other pets or people? Maybe they’re a new rescue pup and are still settling into your home. Or they were sick growing up, so you missed their critical socialization period. Possibly they’ve had a bad experience after being raised as a normal puppy.
Do you have a reactive dog or suspect you may have one? You’re not alone!

From 2009 to 2020, there was a 40 percent increase in the development of public dog parks. Designated spots for canine exercise have become commonplace in every major city in North America — many pet owners won’t even consider renting an apartment that doesn’t have its own fenced-in pet area for their canine companions.
Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”

Just 20 minutes outside of the busy city of Portland, Oregon, and settled right on the banks of the Columbia River, you’ll find what countless visitors have flocked to the area in search of – mountain views, crisp, clean air, and running water for miles. What you might not expect to find, however, is a hidden oasis designed just for dogs and their people, owned and operated by a farming couple and enjoyed by visitors on two legs, and four.
