We have always been partial to bully breeds (and german shepherds, sorry) and Dark Horse Dogs does the most for pitties in the Chicago area. I’ve never met a more devoted, and sarcastic, group of dog lovers. I’m thankful to be part of this community (my wife forces me into).

CCR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 2001 to help find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs in our city. CCR has saved the lives of over 8,000 dogs while also finding their forever homes! Traditionally, these animals were automatically euthanized at area shelters. However, today, Chicago Canine Rescue exists to give many of these animals a second chance, too! CCR assists the animals that are the MOST vulnerable in our city ‚the dogs that are slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, too injured, have disabilities, or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters at other shelters. We are committed to each dog who comes into our care and won't stop providing for them we find their perfect family! Though we are just one of many rescues in Chicago, our dogs are one in a million and we are committed to leaving no dog behind!

We adopted our pup from CARE and feel so lucky. He was found on the streets of Chicago weighing in at 6 pounds and near death. He was transferred to CARE who had him shaved because he was so matted and nurtured up to 10 pounds. After being fixed and chipped we were lucky enough to be allowed to adopt him. Pickles (CARE name Homer) is now a healthy 15 pounds and the joy of our lives.

As a dog walking volunteer, I get the chance to interact and observe the staff several times a week. They are so intoned with the dogs and treat them like their own. The dogs love them. They also have a vet and trainer on site to keep the pups healthy and adoptable. Over the years, there have been a few that had terminal illnesses and they were loved on and treated medically until it was their time to cross. Many tears were shed when this had to be done. The kennels and building is very clean as are all the animals. Each kennel has an outdoor run and there are 3 large yards to get the dogs out to play in. I'm proud to be a part of this organization.

Quad City Animal Welfare Center (QCAWC) was established in 1977 and has been dedicated to a no-kill philosophy. Located in Milan, Illinois, QCAWC is the only full service no-kill animal shelter in the Quad Cities and surrounding area. Operating solely on donations, QCAWC serves the Iowa ‚Illinois Quad Cities and surrounding counties. Every family deserves to have a pet; unfortunately not all families have the same resources. QCAWC offers low cost spaying and neutering. Along with spaying and neutering QCAWC has a low cost, high quality clinic open to the public every Wednesday and the first Saturday of every month. These unique services give families the opportunity for affordable veterinarian care. Last year, 2023, our clinic surgically altered over 4,500 companion animals. We also operate a mobile vet van that offers low cost, high quality mobile wellness to make prevention care more accessible. In our own communities, each year thousands of pets are left homeless to fend for themselves. The QCAWC accepted and re-homed over 1,500 companion animals in 2023 and more than 500 pet parents visited our pet food pantry. QCAWC carries on the tradition of educating our young people to be humane and compassionate to all beings, knowing that kind acts can influence us all. QCAWC partners with schools throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding area to provide quality educational programs to teach young people that treating all living beings with kindness, compassion, and respect is the most responsible way to live. Our school presentations emphasize proper pet care, bite prevention, animal safety and the pet overpopulation. The QCAWC presents humane educational programs to schools in both Illinois and Iowa. The impact of our programs in the community not only could save an animals life, but could save a child's life by teaching them how to avoid being bitten by a dog. We are committed to remaining a no-kill and continually strive to improve our programs and enhance our efforts to control the pet population and service our community.

I have never met anyone who has a deeper love and devotion to dogs as Anja does. She truly dedicates every moment of everyday to rescuing and caring for dogs in need. I myself have adopted three from her. We have since become friends and I truly enjoy sharing news about my dogs with her as I know it brightens up her day to hear how they are doing. She will never adopt to someone unless she is confident that the dog(s) will be loved and well cared for. She will never try to hide a behavior from you, she will be upfront and honest because her #1 priority is the dog in her care. She is not in it for the money, quite the opposite as she often pays out of her own pocket to fund the rescue of animals in need. She is an angel to all the dogs she rescues. It takes a special kind of person to put the blood sweat in tears into the effort like she does. The more people that adopt from her, the more street dogs in Aruba, the more dogs in high kill shelters (many of which she pulls on the day of their euthanasia) she can save.

As a dedicated volunteer at the shelter, I’ve witnessed firsthand the extraordinary lengths the staff and fellow volunteers go to in order to meet the individual needs of each animal in our care. From the moment an animal arrives, they are treated with compassion and respect, receiving a comprehensive health check that informs their personalized care plan. The shelter is not just a place of refuge; it’s a place where healing begins. For the frightened and the shy, there are quiet spaces and gentle hands to coax them out of their shells. For the energetic and playful, there’s a plethora of toys and activities to stimulate their minds and bodies. Special diets are meticulously prepared for those with health issues, and cozy beds are provided for all, ensuring they feel safe and loved. What sets this shelter apart is the unwavering commitment to understanding and addressing the unique personality and history of each animal. Rehabilitation and training programs are tailored to help overcome past traumas, building trust and preparing them for their forever homes. Success stories of animals who have flourished and found loving families are a testament to the shelter’s dedication. But beyond the care provided to the animals, the shelter also fosters a community of compassion among volunteers and adopters, educating and advocating for responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. It’s a beacon of hope not only for the animals but also for the people it touches, spreading kindness and inspiring change. Being part of this incredible team has been profoundly rewarding. I am moved by the resilience of the animals and the compassion of those who care for them. This shelter doesn’t just change animal lives; it changes human lives too, including mine.

In the heart of every pet adoption story, there is a hope for a forever home filled with love and security. My journey with Orphans of the Storm began in 2020, when my family and I had the privilege of adopting Fran, a dog with a spirit as gentle as her eyes were kind. From the moment we walked into Orphans of the Storm, their warmth, professionalism, and dedication to the animals in their care were evident. They were not just facilitating an adoption; they were creating a family. Fran quickly became an integral part of our lives, teaching us about unconditional love and patience. Fran refused to take walks without both my husband and myself and we often joked she was a great marriage counselor. However, as life unfolded with its unexpected twists, we faced a heart-wrenching decision. With the arrival of our daughter in 2022, Fran's significant anxiety and reactiveness became a concern. Her safety, and that of our newborn, led us to the most difficult decision a pet owner could make: rehoming our beloved dog. This decision brought us back to Orphans of the Storm, but now, under circumstances we never imagined. They brought a compassion and understanding to our experience that helped us take the necessary steps that would lead to Fran finding a home that better suited her needs. They engaged in multiple conversations with us, not just addressing our concerns but helping us to come to the difficult decision without any fear of judgement. It was clear that they were advocates for Fran’s well-being above all else. Returning Fran to the shelter was an emotional whirlwind, but the staff at Orphans of the Storm received her with open arms and hearts full of kindness. Their dedication to her many needs, and their attentiveness to our requests, showcased their unwavering commitment to the animals they tirelessly work to protect. They worked very hard to ensure Fran's story would not end there but would instead transition into a new chapter filled with happiness and peace. Thanks to Orphans of the Storm, Fran found her forever home in an amazing dog sanctuary in Texas, where she is thriving, happy, and loved. The journey was fraught with difficulty and sorrow, but the compassion, support, and kindness we received from Orphans of the Storm was above and beyond what I could have imagined. I write this testimonial not just as a former pet owner, but as a strong supporter of Orphans of the Storm. Their dedication to the welfare of animals and the families that love them is unparalleled. I am eternally grateful for their help and support through an incredibly challenging decision.
