Best Dog Frisbee Discs for Playing Fetch thumbnail

Looking for the perfect new frisbee to take your dog’s fetch game to the next level—or just trying to replace an old favorite toy now that it’s lost or broken? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a deep dive into some of the best dog discs available today.

Read on to find the flyer that’s perfect for your pup!

Why are frisbees great dog toys?

Frisbees are one of the most classic dog toys. They’re fun for both dog and pet parent! It’s a thrilling sight to watch your pup leaping into the air to catch a disc in their mouth, perfectly timing their movements with the trajectory of the throw. Plus the fast-paced nature of the game easily piques your canine’s prey drive, which makes for a fulfilling activity—and it's usually easier to throw a frisbee a longer distance than a traditional ball.

Sounds like a win-win-win to us.

(You can read more about enriching your dog’s life and meeting their biological needs here.)

Safety notes about playing fetch with your dog

Fetch is fun—but disc games come with potential health risks

Health risks of frequent exercise that involves repetitive motion, like fast-paced games of fetch, include:

  • Muscle and tendon strain, soreness, and tears—this is an especially large risk with lofty frisbee throws that cause your dog to jump into the air
  • Joint damage and increased chance of developing arthritis
  • Mental fixation (some particularly hyper aware dogs, like herding breeds, might have a genetic predisposition to motion sensitivity that can cause them to exhibit obsessive tendencies over time)
  • Chronic overarousal where your dog struggles to relax before or after the game

You can mitigate these risks by:

  • Helping your dog warm up first before strenuous exercise.
  • Keeping tabs on their health with regular vet check ups.
  • Paying attention if anything seems “off” with your dog (like they start moving stiffly or showing sensitivity to normal petting).
  • Providing sufficient mental stimulation and other forms of enrichment alongside your games of fetch.

What's the best dog disc for your pup’s play style?

As much as we love simple answers, the reality is that there’s no one best dog frisbee. Your pup’s favorite toys will depend on many factors:

  • what games they most enjoy
  • what environments you usually play in
  • your own throwing power
  • your ability to aim (don't worry, we struggle too sometimes)
  • whether they can be fully off leash or are on a long line

We’ve put together a list of great discs organized by those personal preferences. Let's find the right fit for your best friend!

The best dog frisbees for long distance throws

These frisbees are great traditional options to use in large open spaces. They fly level and straight without too much throwing technique required. Long flight time can keep your dog especially engaged!

Note that many of these discs are made of plastic—if your dog is older or struggles with any teeth problems, you’ll want to check with your veterinarian before asking them to catch a plastic disc and might consider a soft dog frisbee instead.

  • Hero Disc USA Dog Discs: According to HeroDisc, the company manufactures "a full line of flying discs, including the Pup 120 Air 235, Atom 185 Xtra 235, SuperSonic 215, SuperAero 235, SuperHero 235, SuperStar 235, and SuperSwirl 235 models; designed for general play & canine disc competition." They're a favorite of competitive disc dog tournaments.
  • Hyperflite Jawz: Hyperflite claims this disc is "the toughest and best-flying puncture-resistant competition disc ever made. The K-10 Jawz disc stands up to gnashing canine teeth better than any other canine disc."
  • Booda Tailspin Flyer: Petmate says "the Booda® Tail Spin Flyer is a fun, durable, interactive fetch toy that will keep your dog entertained in and out of the water. This flexible Booda dog toy flies and floats--and even doubles as a water dish when you're on the move. This high-flying toy is soft and gentle on your pet's teeth and gums, and is a safe way to play and exercise with your furry friend!"

The best dog discs for playing in the wind

These discs are heavy enough that they can handle a breeze without flying off track. While no frisbee will be able to completely power through the wind, of course, these higher weight options are a good choice if you live in an environment where completely calm days are hard to come by.

  • Chuckit! Paraflight: Petmate says "Chuckit!® Paraflight® Flyer is perfect for games of fetch! The Paraflight Flyer features a soft rubber edge that's gentle on your dog's gums and teeth, but a strong multilayer lightweight nylon interior makes it durable for playtime. Bright colors give it increased visibility and help to prevent the flyer from getting lost. The aerodynamic shape is perfect for long distance games of fetch. Soars through the air and descends gradually, which allows your dog plenty of opportunities to run and jump after it."
  • Hyperflite Jawz: As mentioned in the above section, Hyperflite claims this disc is "the toughest and best-flying puncture-resistant competition disc ever made. The K-10 Jawz disc stands up to gnashing canine teeth better than any other canine disc." It's also heavy enough to handle some wind better than other frisbee options.

The best dog frisbees for fetching in the water

These frisbees fly well and—most importantly—also float! They’re lightweight and won’t absorb water, so you don’t have to worry about them getting bogged down as your pup swims. That’s great news to avoid water intoxication, which can happen when you play fetch in a river, pond, or lake and your dog ingests too much liquid too quickly.

  • StarMark Easy Glider: About their durafoam disc, Starmark says "patented design throws straight and level - no skills required. Steady, hovering movement is easy to track and catch. One piece design is strong, but soft on teeth and gums. Floats in water [to provide] lots of disc catching fun at the lake, beach, or pool."
  • Ruffwear Hydro Plane Disc: Ruffwear claims their Hydro Plane™ Floating Throw Toy "floats high on snow and water alike for year-round performance. Dogs learning to fetch can build confidence with the soft construction. The oversized-ring design is easy to pick up and may even inspire a game of tug, making it great for training and exercising and an all-around good time."

The best dog discs for pups still learning to play frisbee

These discs are larger sizes than many others on the market, making them ideal for dogs who haven’t quite gotten the game down yet. It can be hard to jump up and catch a small object—there’s less room for error in anticipating where it will fly and land—so bulkier options can help your pup be successful as they learn.

  • Kurgo Tossing Disc: Indestructible Dog says "the Tossing Disc is made of a super tough and thick material that is sure to hold up. Perfect size for a good game of fetch." It's soft, large, and has an open center to make it easy for novice dogs to pick up without getting frustrated.
  • StarMark Easy Glider: As mentioned in the previous section, Starmark says their durafoam disc has a "patented design throws straight and level - no skills required. Steady, hovering movement is easy to track and catch. One piece design is strong, but soft on teeth and gums. Floats in water [to provide] lots of disc catching fun at the lake, beach, or pool."
  • Hyper Pet Flippy Flopper: Hyper Pet boasts that "the Flippy Flopper dog frisbee is easy to spot in the bushes, leaves, grass and snow with its fun bright colors and unique designs. [It] features a durable, multilayer nylon construction which is safe on your dog’s teeth and designed for long-lasting outdoor use."

The best dog frisbees for smaller environments

These frisbees are still fun to throw and catch, but they’re softer and don’t fly quite as far. Those traits make them ideal for play over shorter distances in smaller environments, like your yard or a local indoor training facility. You don’t need to worry about them breaking windows or other belongings if they go off track!

  • Kong Flyer: Kong highlights that "the natural rubber [of the Kong Flyer] makes for a softer, forgiving catch during fetch. It also delivers a dynamic rebound if your dog misses the initial toss."
  • Chuckit! Zipflight: Chuckit! says "on land and in the water the Zipflight amphibious flying ring is designed for exceptional visibility and performance. Soft yet hardwearing, with rubber rim and liner for extra grip and strength."
  • Hyper Pet Flippy Flopper: Hyper Pet boasts that "the Flippy Flopper dog frisbee features a durable, multilayer nylon construction which is safe on your dog’s teeth and designed for long-lasting outdoor use. [Its] soft lightweight material makes it buoyant allowing for long range throws."

The best dog discs for playing tug, too

These discs are durable, making them a good option if your dog likes to tug for a bit between rounds of fetch. No frisbee is completely indestructible—if you plan on engaging in a long game of tug-of-war, it’s best to use a designated tug toy instead. That said, these frisbees should hold up to at least some teeth action.

  • Kong Flyer: Kong highlights that "the natural rubber [of the Kong Flyer] makes for a softer, forgiving catch during fetch. It also delivers a dynamic rebound if your dog misses the initial toss. The natural KONG Classic red rubber formula is created to be durable."
  • TUFFY Ultimate Flyer: DogTuff says "for our Ultimate series we add an additional layer of webbing, whenever possible around the outside edge to cover the seams of the toy. This is sewn multiple times, for added durability."
  • Ruffwear Pacific Ring: Ruffwear notes that their Pacific Ring interactive dog toy's "versatile design engages a range of play styles – especially zealous fetchers and tuggers. The Pacific Ring’s high-tenacity rope establishes a tug-worthy build and a flexible, flight-friendly shape. It’s a fun, rewarding way to strengthen the bond between canine and human."
  • West Paw Sailz Frisbee: About their Sailz Frisbee, West Paw says: "Made responsibly with Seaflex™ this disc was inspired by disc golf shapes in order to fly far and true! Durable and lightweight with a center hole to make it easier for dogs to pick it up and bring back for another toss."

Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't.
