Bay Area Rescue Keeshonden, Inc. (BARK) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) Keeshond Rescue organization. Donations to BARK are tax-deductible.
We love Keeshonden for the same reasons you’re visiting our website today. They’re beautiful, sweet, cheerful companions who bring us joy every day. It breaks our hearts to think of them sad and homeless, lost, or dying in shelters.
We are a 100% volunteer, 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our dedicated volunteers are passionate Keeshond lovers who devote their time and energy to saving the lives of these wonderful dogs and placing them in loving forever homes. Our volunteers have saved hundreds of Keeshonden! Our work is funded by donations from people like you.
Many of our dogs come from shelters, where they’ve been lost or abandoned. Other dogs come from owners who are unable to care for them due to illness or other life changes. The typical Keeshond is a resilient, optimistic dog who bonds devotedly to a loving new family.
What do we do?
We care for each of our dogs in a comfortable foster home, where they’re treated as members of the family. Living with our dogs keeps our dogs happy while they await their forever homes, and enables our volunteers to evaluate each dog in a home setting and learn about the individual dog’s personality and needs.
We have each dog examined by our veterinarian, tested for heartworms, vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered before adoption. We also provide appropriate testing and medical treatment on a case-by-case basis, to ensure each dog is as comfortable and healthy as possible.
When you apply to adopt one of our dogs, our adoption process allows us to learn more about you, your home, your experience, lifestyle, and needs. We match our dogs with their new people very carefully. Our goal is for you and your new dog to be happy together!

Adoption Policy
Our adoption process is all about getting to know you and our dogs, so we can find the perfect match.
Our approach is personalized! We consider details such as the type of home (house, condo, etc.), children or elderly people in the home, other pets, your dog experience (first time dog owner, experienced trainer, or in between), and any special needs that you or the dog may have. We do our best to match our dogs and adopters according to each one’s needs and personalities. We’d be delighted to see if we can match you with a dog!
Here’s how it works:
1) You fill out an adoption application.
This is the first step in helping us get to know you. You’ll tell us about yourself and your family, where you live, your needs and experience, and your lifestyle. This gives us an idea of the type of dog that might be best for you.
2) We contact you.
One of our volunteers will call you to talk about your application and the type of dog you’re looking for (age, personality, etc.)
3) We do a home visit.
Seeing where the dog will live gives us an opportunity to meet you and your family in person, see where the dog will live, and answer any questions you might have.
4) You meet the dog.
If it looks like one of our dogs may be a good match for you, we make arrangements for you and the dog to meet. We usually introduce our dogs in their foster homes, so the dog is comfortable in familiar surroundings, and it’s easier for you to see what the dog is like to live with.
5) Adopting your dog.
If you and the dog like one another, we’ll go ahead with the adoption, and in most cases, you can take the dog home with you. The adoption fee is $150 to $450, depending on the dog.
6) After adoption.
We’ll stay in touch, and be here to give you advice and support for the dog’s lifetime. If you have questions or concerns, all you have to do is email or call us, and we’ll do our best to help. Our adopters become part of our BARK family! We’ll look forward to seeing you and your dog at our events!

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
