Felines & Canines is located in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Our focus at F&C is to place safe, social and loving dogs and cats into permanent loving homes.
We are best known for our exceptional care for both our animals and adopters, ground breaking program for FIV-positive cats, and creation of our nation's very first rescue and relocation facility - Felines & Canines Rescue Center.
Mission and Vision
As a licensed 501(c)(3), no-kill animal shelter, Felines & Canines is dedicated to providing a safe and loving shelter to abandoned, injured, abused and neglected animals until their permanent adoptive home is found. We strengthen the human/animal relationship through counseling, education, and compassion
Adoption Policy
Our adoption process is one that allows us to get to know the needs and desires of everyone in the household in order to ensure a successful match. In an effort to achieve this goal, we ask that all adopters be prepared with the following:
1. You and everyone in the household have discussed and are prepared (physically, emotionally, and financially) for the addition of a companion animal into your lives and home.
2. Every person living full-time in the household be present during the adoption process. If you are looking to adopt a dog and have an existing dog in the home, you must bring that dog with to do a dog-to-dog introduction.
3. All animals in your home are currently spayed/neutered unless they are medically unable to be altered.
4. Adopters must be 18 years or older and willing/able to meet with an adoption counselor to answer questions, complete an adoption application, and sign an adoption contract.
5. We do same-day adoptions and do not hold animals; therefore we ask that you be prepared to take your adopted animal home with you that day.
6. Please bring a photo ID and form of payment. We accept all major credit cards (preferred method of payment) and cash. Personal checks are no longer accepted.

"F&C is the most incredible rescue helping here in Northern AL. Their Hunter Stephenson Rescue center in Owen's Cross Roads pulls cats, kittens, puppies and dogs from 8 counties and bring them back to the rescue to prepare them for their furever homes in IL and other Midwestern states. The staff match the critter to their potential family for the canines. Felines have their own "cat house" in IL where folks can meet and bond with their new family member. In the years I have volunteered and later supported them they have rescued over 20,000 dogs and cats. On the average they rescue 300 during any given month. They care for those HW+, FIV+ cats and kittens. They are currently throwing their hearts and souls into saving 18 parvo puppies. These they pulled from a shelter to give them a chance of survival and life. They accept senior critters, not just the cute young ones. I had the privilege to volunteer at the Rescue Center. The physical and emotion demands on the staff are immense. They take it as their calling. 24 hours care for the current parvo puppies is beyond what other would even attempt. They dig deeper into their heart of hearts to do everything possible for these little ones while still pulling some 300 critters in need and providing them with their normal top shelf workups. They are absolutely the best!"

"Felines & Canines is committed to saving cats and dogs with love and compassion. They have built a rescue center in Alabama to help vet the animals and provide medical care before transport to Chicago. The matching of pets with potential adoptees is done with care to ensure the best outcome for human and animal."

"Felines and Canines saved my life.
We adopted our girl in July of 2021. In the last year, I had been diagnosed with a genetic disease that causes lots of chronic pain, got COVID, had to postpone my wedding for a second time, and was falling deeper and deeper into depression. We had also tried to adopt a pup a few months before from somewhere else, but we weren't a good fit for him, and I was devastated. I was idly browsing Petfinder one day when I saw fka Frida's photo, and sent off the only application I had sent out for months.
When Abby emailed us to come meet her, we definitely didn't expect to fall in love and become dog parents that day, but we did, and I can't imagine a more perfect fit. I am thankful every day that she was able to make the connection to bring us together.
The care that Abby, Sam, and the rest of team put into making matches and saving lives (both human and animal) both during the initial adoption process and throughout the pet parenthood process is incredible. If we have questions, they're there with answers. If we need a second opinion about something, they're there. If someone needs some support for anything from animal medical care to food or other necessities, they're on it. Our girl is healthy, happy, and we have the entire Chicago & Alabama teams to thank!
In the last nearly three years since we adopted, I've gotten to see firsthand the lives they save. Right now, they have 18 parvo pups that were dumped, and they're working on getting each of them through happy and healthy. This is not a unique situation, they do it for every critter that comes through their doors. They've done such innovative work with FIV+ cats, and I'm not even a cat person, but the floor at their adoption center that's made for cats is the coziest place and I could spend hours here. I am so proud to be a donor and so incredibly lucky that I happened upon them."
