Helping PAWS Pet Rescue is a nonprofit organization that has been active in the Washburn, Bayfield, and Ashland area of northwestern Wisconsin since February 2006. The goal of our organization is no adoptable companion animal should ever be euthanized for lack of medical care and a good home. This is not limited to dogs and cats, but extends equally to horses, rabbits, birds, and other domestic animals.
We are unique in that we care for not only young, healthy homeless pets but also surrendered animals and animals that have medical needs that would cause them to be rejected or euthanized at other rescues. We are also often on the receiving end of puppy mills and hoarding situations. For these animals, HPPR is often viewed as their “last chance to survive.” As a professional non-profit organization, we collaborate with volunteers, animal welfare partners, and other shelters to rescue animals in need. We are a no kill animal rescue, and as such, adoptable animals remain with us until they find their forever home.
We strive to provide unparalleled care to our adoptable animals. We have daily continued veterinarian support. The animals in our care are provided with natural, high-quality nutrition, regular exams, and all appropriate vaccines and preventive care. Any medical issues that may arise are treated appropriately, and all surgeries are performed with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a surgical laser.
Mission and Vision
To help stop the suffering of companion animals caused by homelessness, overpopulation and mistreatment.
Adoption Policy
Minimum Requirements
If you are visiting our website, we know you are strongly considering adoption. The decision to adopt is an important one which we take very seriously. Helping PAWS Pet Rescue believes all responsible families deserve and benefit from pet ownership.
To adopt an animal, you must be:
• At least 21 years old
• Able to provide veterinary and personal references
• Able to pay the adoption donation cost
If you rent a home or apartment, are pets allowed? Are you prepared to pay for high-quality food, routine veterinary care, vaccinations, and emergency care if it is needed?
The Process
Each animal available for adoption receives:
• Excellent veterinary services while the animal is in our care.
• High quality food.
• Comprehensive deworming.
• Micro-chipping if available.
• Modified live vaccines which induce a stronger, longer-lasting immunity than inactivated vaccines.
• Spay/neuter surgery performed with a laser if the animal is mature enough. This results in reduced bleeding, decreased pain in immediate post-operative timeframe, and less swelling at the surgical site.
Adoption Process
Adopting a pet is a big decision, and HPPR works hard to ensure that every adoption is the best possible experience for the pet and family alike.
HPPR believes all responsible families deserve and benefit from the companionship of a pet.
There are no costs associated with the application process, although an adoption donation is required.
The process involves contacting the applicant’s veterinary and personal references to ensure that any adopted pet will always have optimal nutrition, preventive and medical care.
Dogs: Cost determined on a case-by-case basis after the age, health, and needs of each dog have been individually determined. Base donation is $300-$500
We are seeking the best match for our animals and for you, we consider all applications for a particular animal, and do not operate on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Applications are reviewed anonymously by our Adoption Committee. Every effort is made to obtain a determination as quickly as possible, and many applications are processed in as little as 24 hours.

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
