Illinois Shorthair Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, breed specific rescue group serving Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Our mission is to rescue German Shorthaired Pointers and educate the public about this amazing breed. We place them with responsible, loving families where they are cared for until we find them their forever home.
We rescue GSPs from many circumstances: animal control facilities, humane societies, owner relinquish, puppy mills, and conditions involving cruelty and neglect. Our rescued dogs receive loving care and medical attention. They are fostered in private homes and live indoors as family companions while they wait for their forever homes.
At Illinois Shorthair Rescue, we believe ALL unwanted and discarded German Shorthaired Pointers deserve the chance to find their special forever home. A special place where they will receive the love and care they deserve.
Illinois Shorthair Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in northern Illinois. We were founded in 2005. Each year ISR finds homes for more than 60 orphaned GSPs. Our officers, directors, and foster homes are made up of volunteers who reside throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. We will consider applicants in adjacent states, assuming we have a volunteer available for a home visit. We cannot, however, do long distance adoptions. Our rescue efforts are managed out of our own homes and are juggled with our careers and family. Through telephone interviews, veterinary reference checks, and on-site home visits, ISR volunteers work extremely hard to place our dogs with the best suited family. Our goal is that the new home will be the dog’s final home.
ISR’s expenses are funded through our adoption fees, fund-raising efforts, and donations. Your support is greatly appreciated, and your contributions are tax deductible.

Adoption Policy
The Application Process
Our goal is to place our orphans in permanent, forever homes. Please be sure you can commit the time and resources needed to care for your dog long-term. We will consider applicants in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan if we have a volunteer available for a home visit. If you are not from an area we cover, please visit National GSP Rescue to find a group that covers your state or region. Our adoption fees reflect the vetting and other care we provide to all our orphans. Our adoption fee is $390 for adult dogs, $250 for seniors (8 years and older), $600 for puppies under 1 year.
STEP 1
Read the adoption application carefully and complete it fully. Our application helps us get to know you and helps us find the right dog for you. Submit your application online.
STEP 2
Once your application is received, it is reviewed by a volunteer to determine if further information is needed. Please check the email that you provided on your application throughout the process. We are 100% volunteer-based, therefore, the time to process applications can vary. It helps in expediting your application if you contact your Vet’s office and notify them that we will be calling for a Vet reference check.
STEP 3
We will check your references and contact your regular Vet to ensure current and/or previous pets have been kept up-to-date with vaccines and monthly heartworm preventative. ISR strives to control the pet population, and we will not allow our dogs to be adopted into homes with animals that are not spayed/neutered.
STEP 4
If your application moves forward, a volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit. The home visit is a vital part of the process with the purpose of meeting potential adopters and get a feel for their home environment. Home visits may be in person or virtual. We ask that all family members be present for the home visit.
STEP 5
Once the above steps are completed and you have been approved, you will receive more detailed information on available orphans currently in our program. If it is determined that a particular GSP is a good fit for both the dog and the applicant, then a meet and greet can be arranged. Prior to the actual adoption, we require a signed adoption contract, signed medical sheet, and payment of the adoption fee.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND:
The adoption fee is non-refundable and serves to reimburse ISR for the costs invested in your new GSP. If the placement doesn’t work out, we require the dog be returned to OUR care. We will take any of our rescues back, regardless of the reason. We ask for a minimum of two week’s notice for us to find foster care for the dog. We reserve the right to refuse any applicant.

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
