Minnesota Greyhound Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes, for all Sighthounds. Our goal is to assist any Greyhound, Lurcher, Staghound, Whippet, Galgo, or any other Sighthound in need – both locally and internationally. We rescue, transport, provide medical care, adopt, and support Sighthounds in the Twin Cities, Rochester, and greater Minnesota areas. Our mission includes educating the public about the availability and suitability of Greyhounds and other Sighthound breeds as family pets.
Minnesota Greyhound Rescue was founded in 2006 by Jen with the “Founding Hounds” – Palu, Crisco, Tobey, Annie, Chester, Tanner, and Abby the Schnauzer – and adopted her first greyhound, Palu, in April 2001 from Adopt a Greyhound Atlanta. Jen was AAGA’s Event Coordinator for four years before moving back to Minnesota and founding MNGR. There are also five “2-legged” children in the house, all adopted from China. Needless to say, busy lives, but there is such a love for Greyhounds and Sighthounds that nothing can get in the way!
MNGR can help you add a new member to your family from our location in the Twin Cities all while supporting the majority of the state of Minnesota.

Adoption Policy
Adoption Requirements
*These requirements apply to all Sighthounds available through Minnesota Greyhound Rescue.*
• Leash or Fence
MNGR does not require applicants to have a fenced yard. However, we do require that adopters then be willing to walk the Sighthound ON-LEASH at all times. Your dog should NEVER be off-leash when outside a securely fenced area.
• Children
MNGR does not have restrictions on the age of children in an applicant’s home. We consider each application on a case-by-case basis. If we believe that the parents in the home will take responsibility for the safety of both the children AND the adopted dog, then we can place a Sighthound in a home with children of any age. Applicants with children under 6 will be asked to read “Childproofing Your Dog” by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson.
• Approval
MNGR reserves the right to approve or deny an application for any reason at any point in the application process. MNGR’s foremost responsibility is to the safety and well-being of the dogs in our care. MNGR adopts our hounds out to a 3 hour drive radius of the Twin Cities area. If you live farther away, there is a chance your application will be declined solely due to distance.
Adoption Process
*Please note we do not schedule meet and greets until an application is received and approved.*
• Step 1: Do your homework
The first step is to read through all the information provided on MNGR’s website. You can also check out books like “Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies” by Lee Livingood. This will help you make an informed decision about whether a Sighthound is the right dog for you!
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of every dog in our care, we do have some requirements for adopting our Sighthounds. Before filling out an application, be sure to review our Adoption Requirements and Agreement.
• Step 2: Submit an application
Now it’s time to complete our Adoption Application!
Please answer all questions thoroughly and thoughtfully. We review every detail to make the best matches possible! You’ll receive a reply from our application coordinator, usually within 3 weeks.
• Step 3: Meet and greet
Based on your application and our conversations with you, we’ll have you meet some available hounds that we think may be a good fit for you and your family. This meeting will take place at either our kennel in Inver Grove Heights or at a hound’s foster home. We require that all persons in the household and all current resident dog/s be present at this meeting.
• Step 4: Home visit
If you decide to continue with the adoption process, it’s time for a home visit!
One of our representatives will come to your home. No, you don’t have to bake us cookies, and there will be no “white-glove” test. We are simply looking to see whether your home is realistically equipped to house a Sighthound. We’re looking for things like poisonous plants, super slippery floors, glass knick-knacks at tail height, and other things that could be hazardous to the hound. This is also a great time for you to ask EVERY question you can think of in preparation for you new family member. We prefer that all members of the family who will interact with your new hound be present.
• Step 5: Bring your hound home
We will schedule a time for you to sign the adoption agreement, pay the adoption fee, and bring home your new hound!
Just remember, many Sighthounds come from an environment that is NOTHING like your home. There’s going to be many things that may be strange, frightening, and completely new for them such as TV’s, windows, mirrors, vacuums, and so many other things that we take for granted that they may have never seen or heard before. We also recommend reading up on a process known as the “2 Week Shutdown” by Stacie Sparks. The “Shut Down” is a great way to let your hound begin to adjust to their new home and for you to start setting some basic ground rules.
