The Riley County Humane Society, formed in January 1975, is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill animal rescue organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. We receive no funding from the government, United Way, or any national animal welfare organization.
Although we do not operate the local city animal shelter, we do work closely with area shelters to promote adoptions. In addition, we have our own animals available for adoptions that are cared for by volunteer foster parents.
We serve the Manhattan community, including surrounding counties, by providing a variety of programs. These include educational programs benefiting elementary schools, informational booths and displays at special community events, spay/neuter/release for feral cats, participation in fairs and events sponsored by national animal welfare organizations to promote responsible pet ownership, and our fostering program. Several fund-raisers are conducted throughout the year as well to benefit homeless animals in the community. Please see our Programs page for more details.
Mission and Vision
Our Mission
Improving the lives of companion animals through adoption, education, and support.
Vision Statement
RCHS envisions a day when companion animals are no longer being neglected or abused; when each enjoys love, care, and safety with a human family; when pet owners are proud to say their animals are spayed or neutered; when dogs are not chained outside all day; when cats in feral colonies have been spayed or neutered and live out their lives under community care; when no healthy or treatable shelter dog or cat is lead from its cage to die, only to make room for another. We work for the day when our efforts are no longer needed.
Prevention
Actively engage in Spay/Neuter Promotion and Assistance
Support legislation to address the overpopulation of companion animals
Adoption
Accept pets into our foster and adoption program from owners unable to provide for their care, whatever the reason
Provide homeless pets with second chances at happy lives in well-matched homes
Promote the benefits of animal companionship and adoption at community events
Welfare
Provide loving foster homes for special needs and hard to place pets
Offer low cost micro-chip clinics to ensure that lost pets return home safely
Advance the humane treatment of all animals (companion, service, lab, farm, and wildlife) through community education and legislative action
Support
Encourage community involvement in the Riley County Humane Society mission through a robust volunteer program
Engage the philanthropic ideals of our community by reaching out to individuals and businesses for sponsorship commitments
Work with the community to raise the funds and employ the talent necessary to carry out all aspects of the Riley County Humane Society mission.
While one paw may at times carry a bit more weight than others, all four must be firmly planted in order to provide the balance and forward momentum vital to the performance of our mission.
Adoption Policy
Adopting a Pet
Adoptions are not handled on a first-come, first serve basis. Our priority is finding the best fit between adoptive families and the animals.
By adopting an animal you are taking responsibility for its well being. As such you must be willing to:
Take the time needed for the proper care and training of your new pet.
Properly feed and maintain the health of your new pet, including regular vaccinations and medical treatment when necessary.
Care for your new pet for its ENTIRE lifetime, making sure that your commitment will be steady through any changes in your lifestyle or circumstances.
Return your animal to RCHS if it becomes impossible for you to meet the obligations above.
Our adoption process is designed to help ensure that you and your adopted pet will have a happy life together. Prior to adoption RCHS will:
Check the references you provide on your application.
If a landlord is involved, we will verify that they will allow your new pet on their property.
If you agree to this then the first step in our process is filling out our application. Filling out the application does not obligate you to adopt but it does allow us to screen applicants before asking our volunteers to meet them. If you have questions about a specific animal please feel free to e-mail our coordinators directly:

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
