Service areas:

Weaverville, Trinity County

The Trinity County Animal Shelter located in Weaverville, California is a county run municipal shelter that is committed to serving the public in the care and well being of animals throughout our county. The Animal Control Officer is not only the Field Officer for the entire county but is also the Shelter Supervisor who is assisted by three part time shelter attendants and many volunteers. The shelter costs and employment are funded by the help of generous donors like you and through the Trinity County Sheriff's Department. Our shelter offers such diverse services as finding homes for adoptable animals, providing for stray animals and offering assistance to owners and people who find lost animals. We also assist animal owners in providing shelter for their pets and livestock during major emergencies such as evacuations during fires.

Mission and Vision

The Abused and Neglected Animals are family and do not deserve to be treated like lawn ornaments to wither away in the weather. Any animal who is being abused or neglected, our Animal Control Officer aims to correct the situation, help the animals who need it and educate the owner to help them understand what is wrong and how to correct the problems. The Homeless, Abandoned and Lost Stray animals are always welcome in our facility where they will be provided with shelter, care and comfort. They will have round the clock access to water and given food on a schedule. Any animal in need of medical care will be taken to a vet and be provided with the necessary treatments they need. All while we're trying to either locate their owner and return them home or find them a new, loving fur-ever home. The People of our Community By connecting with our community, we can better help the animals that come through our facility. Informing, educating and assisting the public with anything they may need that is within our limited ability to do. We offer vouchers to help our Trinity County residents get their animals altered to help with the overpopulation of homeless pets and we try to assist them in rehoming pets as needed.

Adoption Policy

When adopting an animal, there are several questions that the shelter workers need to ask in order to find out if the pet you're interested in would fit in your home. We want to make sure that, not only the pet goes to a loving home but that it will be the right pet for you! There are many cases where people like the looks, size or breed of a dog but the personality of the animal doesn't suit the family situation of the adopter. Our questionnaire we like to ask in person or over the phone so if you are interested in any of our animals, please either stop on by the Trinity County Animal Shelter located at 563 Mountain View St. Weaverville, CA or give us a call at 530.623.1370 If you are adopting an animal and you reside in a place where you have a landlord you are paying to, we will require proof that they approve you having a pet on their property, whether it be the land your trailer is on, the trailer, house or apartment itself or your parent's spare room. If you are interested in a dog and you have a dog, you will be asked to bring your current dog(s) with you to our facility so we can do a meet-and-greet on neutral territory to make sure when you bring your new puppy home, you won't have a dog fight. You may love the animal but your current fur-baby might get jealous and not like their new sibling. Due to the fact that we are a small shelter with a low population county, we fall into a weird bracket that allows us to adopt out unaltered animals but take a deposit (Sort of like a down payment) to get them fixed. If you are interested in adopting an unaltered animal, we will require you to contact the vet of your choice and make the spay / neuter appointment while you're at the shelter so we can confirm the animal will get fixed. We do not allow the breeding of cats or dogs adopted from our shelter. By the contract that you sign when you adopt the animal, you are agreeing to get them fixed or you will receive legal action against you by the Animal Control Officer. You must be 18 years or older to adopt from our shelter. You must show us a valid California ID or driver's license to fill out the paperwork to adopt from our shelter. If you live in Trinity County and have dogs, your dogs are required to be licensed with us before we will allow you to adopt from our shelter.

How This Family is Affording Their Dream Property Through Renting it Hourly to Dogs

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
