Service areas:

New Bern, James City, River Bend, Trent Woods, Brices Creek, Bridgeton, Fairfield Harbor

Established in 1978, Colonial Capital Humane Society (CCHS) is the only no-kill shelter in Craven County. We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for abandoned, abused and neglected animals while they wait for their forever homes. CCHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer and donation driven organization.

Mission and Vision

The mission of Colonial Capital Humane Society is to rescue and relieve the suffering of abused, abandoned, and stray animals; provide for their care until forever homes can be found; and create greater public awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering and humane treatment of animals.

Adoption Policy

You must be at least 21 years of age to adopt or foster a pet. All pets in the home must be current on vaccinations or spayed/neutered. All dogs must be on heartworm preventative. All cats must be FIV/FELV tested negative (if positive, we may have positive cats available for adoption or foster). We have a strict "No Declaw" and "Indoor Only" policy for cats/kittens adopted from us. If the pet you chose is still available when we receive your application and your application is a good match, we will contact your veterinarian for vetting history.

"Colonial capital humane society has helped me get many critical cases out of the shelter and into foster. They provide a great food pantry for the community! All in all they treat their animals amazingly and we are always happy to send our shelter pets there. I know they will find them the best home possible."

"This group of individuals took over a failing facility on the brink of being shattered to a thriving, well run, integral part of the community and home to the best future the rescued cats and dogs can ever have. They have drawn the entire New Bern and surrounding area into supporting them through creative fundraising events, educational programs that help the community understand the importance of fostering and adoption, and overall care for the health and well- being of the animals. The network of fosters they have built allows that they can be aggressive with "kill" shelters to pull those animals out and into a caring foster family to begin the journey to becoming someone's furever pet. The.ongoing, creative, very successful fund raising program has allowed them to build a beautiful state of the art facility created to increase the number of rescues they can take in and enhance the quality of care the animals receive. And for the 3 years it took to build this facility, all animals had to be with fosters - a feat they accomplished without ever compromising their aggressive mission to go after and assisting any animal or other facility that needed help. The entire group of individuals make me.proud to have played a minor role of fostering. As awful as it is that bad things happen to cats and dogs, those in this geographic area are very fortunate that CCHS is where they land."

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
