Four years ago, I started a search for a “friend” for my dog but ended up with my own best friend. Jules had been abandoned on the side of the road in SC but had the good fortune to be rescued by Pawfect Match. She was cared for, made to feel safe, and loved by her foster family for a couple of months before I was lucky enough to adopt her. The honesty of Pawfect Match’s adoption bios was greatly appreciated when I was searching. They truly want the best homes for their dogs. Jules is my guardian, hiking buddy, and best girl. Thanks to the excellent care of Pawfect Match when rescued, I have the best dog one could ask for.

One of my best friends fosters for Charley's K9 Rescue and it has been amazing to watch how much it has helped her feel fulfilled and supported as a human while also getting to save canine lives! Charley's focuses on the toughest cases and the hardest-to-adopt bully breeds. The rescue leader, Nicole, is an experienced dog trainer who even offers up her time to help train her volunteers/fosters as dog trainers and handlers, which is why so many Charley's dogs move to their furever homes with stellar manners and behavior, even after coming from some of the toughest situations of neglect and abuse. Earlier this year I had the privilege of helping out with transportation, and this rescue is truly full of the kindest and most flexible volunteers who will go far out of their way to team up and get dogs where they need to be. Rescue is an incredible community and there are many great people and places working on getting dogs adopted, but Charley's does it with the most commitment and heart that I've ever seen!

I first started volunteering with Colonial Capital Humane Society five years ago after watching them on Facebook for a couple months. I was immediately one over by all of the caring people that posted such wonderful updates about the dogs and cats needing forever homes. It was clear to me that this was a group of people who truly made it their mission to help all of the homeless, abandoned and stray animals Craven county find amazing homes. My three dogs are all Colonial Capital Humane Society alumni, and the adoption coordinators were amazing and helping find me the perfect additions to my little family. That’s even more amazing. Is that most of the people running the organization are volunteers! Truly wonderful Organization!

I’ve been working in rescue for more than 15 years. I began volunteering as a foster home with Freedom Ride a couple years ago and the experience has been so smooth and rewarding. The management team is exceptional. They do a great job selecting and screening dogs for behavioral issues so that each foster is made aware of a dog’s personality as best as possible under the conditions presented. Everyone is helpful, responsive and encouraging. One can get burnt out in rescue. But that kind of attitude is never present in Freedom Ride. It’s has been a very positive experience.

Saving Grace – Animals for Adoption

    Chapel Hill

Saving Grace began in 2004 at a private residence and farm to bring adoptable dogs and loving homes together. North Carolina is one of the highest states for euthanasia in the country and our mission is to make an impact. Since beginning, we've placed over 30,000 animals, however the task is still daunting. Saving Grace partners with shelters with extremely limited resources where euthanasia rates are high across North Carolina to find adoptable dogs that just need a second chance. We also take a lot of dogs in need of critical care or in dire situations from them as well. Animals are chosen based on their adoptability as successful family members and Saving Grace strives to provide a more natural and non-traditional shelter environment for dogs to interact with others and exhibit their natural behaviors while awaiting their forever homes. Our Funny Farm setting allows adopters to mingle and interact with a variety of dogs and choose a new companion based on temperament and suitability for their home and family. Saving Grace is operated in majority by a hardworking and dedicated volunteer and foster base. This team is dedicated to finding an ever-changing but always special group of dogs an equally special family like yours. From intake to adoption, dogs are cared for by a support system of committed fosters and volunteers. Volunteer roles include everything from transportation, daily care, medical care, and everything in between to get them ready for adoption.

Love Mutts Rescue, Inc. (LMR) is a non-breed-specific dog rescue operating in central North Carolina and south central Virginia. We are a volunteer based, non-profit corporation run by a Board of Directors, and IRS designated 501(c)-3 charity. We rescue dogs in need from the surrounding communities, provide them with appropriate medical care, and place them in foster homes where they can be loved and nourished while they await their forever home. It is our goal to help all dogs that come into our rescue find the families that are destined to be theirs. Love Mutts Rescue was founded to provide a group of people an avenue to rescue animals from shelters. These shelters, and anyone who turns over a stray, can depend on LMR to provide these animals with proper vetting, nurturing fosters to care for them until they are adopted, and places to have adoption events so the rescue & the rescued can interact with potential adopters. We rely on volunteers to open their homes to foster, which is the only limiting factor to save more lives.

Emotional Rescue is a fantastic group who gives medical attention to any disabled stray dogs in their area and beyond. Most of these dogs would be euthanized if it weren't for them. They are so caring of each and every dog that comes to them. It really is an emotioal commitment and must be so very challenging for them seeing the condition these dogs are in when they come to their rescue. The dogs are very well cared for and it really shows. They get every bit of veterinarian care needed. Watching some of the transformations is mind blowing. I am very happy to be a devoted fan.

Second Chance Pet Adoptions is amazing, I started as a volunteer years ago and loved them so much when a position came available I jumped on the opportunity. They take time to work with each family to ensure the very best match, they hand assess and select dogs from small rural shelters locally to them which ensures all funds raised stay in their communities. Animals are cared for from start to finish and adopters become family!

  • Saving Grace – Animals for Adoption Logo

Saving Grace – Animals for Adoption

The first step is to fill out our adoption application. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Once we receive your application, the second step will be for our volunteers to check your vet reference and talk with your personal references. The third step, if your application is approved, is for our volunteers to contact you about scheduling a home check. This is not to see what kind of house you live in or how clean or dirty it is. It is simply to see if the yard size, fencing, etc. is compatible with your dog of interest. It also allows other animals in your household as well as children to meet your potential new dog to see if everyone will get along and to make sure this is truly a 'pawfect' match! After all three of these steps are completed, the final step is to sign the adoption contract and make the adoption donation fee. Your new pet will be up to date on the necessary vaccinations required by the age of the dog at time of adoption, spayed or neutered, on heartworm preventative and flea and tick meds, micro-chipped, groomed, and well on his or her way with basic obedience and house training.
