The Rescue Train is a unique, 501(c)3 nonprofit, no-kill, animal-welfare organization based in Los Angeles, California. We are a small but mighty group of animal advocates, dedicated to making the world a kinder place for pets and the people who love them.
Since our inception in 2004, we have been recognized for our hard work: we labor in the trenches of our city and county shelters, find solutions to pet overpopulation and fight for the rights of animals. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we have saved thousands of animals from suffering and euthanasia.
What Makes Us Different
We are more than just an animal rescue group: we are problem solvers who think outside the box to relieve animal suffering and make sure animals have a loving and safe place in this world. We’ve been at the forefront in applying innovative ideas to animal welfare, implementing programs such as mobile spay/neuter clinics, shelter intervention and a pet pantry. We collaborate with and support other animal-welfare organizations to achieve our common goals.
In 2005 we created an annual fundraiser at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena called Race For The Rescues. This lifesaving event is a fundraising platform for Southern California nonprofit animal-welfare organizations and a mobile adoption event for shelter animals. Many grassroots rescue groups depend on Race For The Rescues to keep their doors open to animals in need.
We Believe
• We believe animals are sentient beings that do not have a voice. It is our duty to speak for them and prevent them from suffering.
• We believe every time we save an animal, there is the possibility that it can make a profound impact on a person’s life.
• We believe when an animal comes onto The Rescue Train, we must ensure that it has a good quality of life after it leaves our care.
Mission and Vision
Rolling Down The Tracks to Save Animals' Lives
The Rescue Train’s deep-rooted goals are to be a voice for animals and to help save as many lives as possible. We fulfill our mission through our key initiatives: rescue and rehome, shelter intervention, dedication to spay and neuter, and collaboration with other like-minded organizations. We aim to drastically reduce the number of animals entering kill shelters and animals living on the streets of Los Angeles.
Rescue Train Values
• Animals are sentient beings that do not have a voice, so it is our duty to speak for them and prevent them from suffering.
• Education and awareness create lasting change.
• The amount of money someone makes should not determine whether they get to experience the unconditional love and joy a companion animal can bring.
• We must ensure that every animal that comes onto The Recue Train has a good quality of life after it leaves our station.
• Every time we save an animal, we know it will make a profound impact on a person's life.
Creating Lasting Chance
Many of our life-saving programs help lay a foundation of lasting change through community outreach. Our Shelter intervention Program and Pet Pantry prevent animals from entering Los Angeles City shelters by providing resources to low income, senior citizens, veterans and homeless pet owners. We offer free spay and neuter to help solve pet overpopulation at the root of the problem. Our Pet Care Clinics go into areas of poverty to provide resources that includes vaccines, grooming, referrals to vet care, pet food and supplies. We are available to mentor other animal welfare non-profits that are interested in creating similar programs in other parts of our country.
When Every Cage Is Empty
We envision a day when our train can pull into the station and our services will not be needed because every animal’s life has value and all animals have the love and safety they deserve.
Adoption Policy
How to Adopt
Find Your Perfect Match
Step 1
View our cats and dogs online or at one of our mobile adoption events:
• View Our Dogs
• Adoption Events
Step 2
Submit an application for the pet of your choice: The application process is not meant to be an invasion of privacy. It’s a tool to help us find out if one of our cats or dogs would fit happily into your home and your lifestyle. We respond to applications within 48 hours. Completion of an application does not guarantee adoption of a Rescue Train animal.
• Dog Application
Step 3
Meet the pet: We do not own a facility. All of our animals are housed in private foster homes. If your application is approved, we will arrange for you to meet the animal at a convenient time, either at the pet’s foster home or at one of our mobile adoptions. Everyone who will be living with the pet needs to attend the meeting.
Step 4
Home Check: While a home visit is required prior to final placement, it does not guarantee adoption. We like to see where our cats and dogs will be living to make sure that they will be in a safe and secure environment. Often, we can help with potential hazards by securing screens, yards and fences to ensure a pet’s safety.
Step 5
Adoption Contract: The adoption contract is a legally binding contract between the adopter and our organization. If, for any reason, the adoption of one of our pets DOES NOT work out, you MUST return the animal to The Rescue Train.
• Dog Adoption Contract
Step 6
Adoption Fee: There is a minimum, tax-deductible, non-refundable donation at time of adoption. These fees help us recoup a small fraction of our costs associated with saving the animal’s life.
Our animals have all received the veterinary care they need. Every animal is:
• Spayed or neutered. If a kitten or puppy is too young to be sterilized prior to adoption, we set up a pre-adoption. Once the animal is old enough to be spayed or neutered, we will arrange and pay for the procedure with one of our vet partners; the adoption will then become finalized.
• Vaccinated
• Microchipped
• Treated for fleas
• Dewormed
• Cat ONLY: Tested for FeLV (Feline Leukemia) and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)
Depending on the age of the kitten or puppy, they may or may not have completed their vaccine series. Once you have adopted an animal, all veterinary expenses, including remaining vaccines, are your responsibility for the life of your pet.
Adoption Fees
• Dog $250
• 2 Bonded Dogs $400
Step 7
Delivery of Your New Family Member: We share our knowledge and years of experience to successfully transition your new pet into your home. We can connect you to resources, including veterinarians, dog trainers and pet insurance companies, and offer tips for nutrition, supplies and more. Each cat or dog has a team of people behind him/her, and we are here as your support system if you should need us.
Step 8
Have a lifetime of joy, laughter and companionship with your new family member!

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
